Unit 4.4 Percentages
The problem

VWXY is a rectangle with length 20cm and width 12cm.The length of the rectangle is increased by 30%. The width of the rectangle is increased by 10%. Find the percentage increase in the area of the rectangle.

The solution

=>  Area of the original rectangle = 20cm x 12cm = 240cm square.

=> Length ( 20cm) increased by 30% ( 100+30= 130% = 1.3)

=> 20 x 1.3 = 26cm

Width ( 12cm)  increased by 10% ( 100+10=110% =1.1)

=> 12 x 1.1 = 13.2

Area of the new rectangle = 26cm x 13.2cm = 343.2 cm square.

Percentage increase = Actual changeOriginal  x 100

Actual change = 343.2 - 240 = 103.2

Percentage increase = 103.2240 x 100 = 43%

Answer is 43%
